It is an unusual novel. The writer uses an unusual narrative structure and a mixture of writing techniques. There is no traditional narrative voice, only dialogue, prison reports, and stream of consciousness narration of the story. We find that the majority of the novel is written in dialogue, without any indication of who is speaking, except for a dash (-) to show the change of speaker. Molina and Valentin share a prison cell in Buenos Aires. The events of the novel take place between September and October 1975. Valentin is a communist revolutionary, a political prisoner who belongs to a revolutionary group trying to overthrow the government, while "Molina" works as a gay window designer in prison on charges of "corrupting a minor." Molina tells Valentin several films he has watched to help them forget their situation, which is also a form of escapism
